The AMIEU Newcastle & Northern NSW Branch has completed our investigation into the Baiada Beresfield chlorine dioxide incident of Monday March 7 2016, where 40 workers were hospitalised following exposure to unsafe levels of hazardous gases. We have now delivered our report.
Our key findings are:
- Baiada’s response to the emergency situation was inadequate in a number of key areas
- Employees are (rightfully) concerned about the capability of the company to respond to future incidents
- More must be done to provide for worker safety at the Baiada Beresfield site
