To and From Work Benefit

If you’re injured on your way to and from work, you could be looking at serious financial consequences. But union members can rest easy knowing they’re supported by other workers just like them through the To and From Work Benefit of the AMIEU.

Financial members of the Branch who are injured when traveling to or from work have access to monthly payments designed to support them as they recover.

How much will this cost me?

Nothing! If you are a paying member of the union, these costs are included in your union fees. You do not have to pay anything extra.

What is the benefit?

Members may benefit from a payment of up to $3,000 per month for 3 months (13 weeks) while they are unable to return to work.

Please note: Members on the AMIEU Low Income Ticket will have their benefit payments capped at $2,000 instead of $3,000.

If I am injured in a motor vehicle accident, will I benefit?

Yes, as long as you are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If you are successful in recovering compensation from the person responsible for your accident, we will ask you to repay an amount equivalent to the benefit paid to you.

Are medical expenses included?

No. The majority of these will be covered by Medicare and private health insurance.

What should I do if I am injured?

See your doctor as soon as possible and make sure you obtain a medical certificate to attach to your To And From Work Benefit form, along with the police event report for the incident.

When does the benefit start?

From the date of the attendance by the medical practitioner.

Does this include a death benefit?

No. In the unfortunate occurrence of death, this benefit is not claimable. Your superannuation fund may be able to assist you in this matter.

How do I claim the benefit?

Simply ring the union office or email us and ask for a benefit application form. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.

If I am not an AMIEU member, can I get this benefit?

No. This benefit is for AMIEU members only. A similar benefit with an insurance provider would cost you substantially more and require you to negotiate it directly.

Is there anything else I should know?

Yes. The payment of any benefit will be subject to approval by the Committee of Management of the Union. The fund will continue to operate for such a time as the Committee of Management deems appropriate. The continued operation of the fund, including the payments of benefits from the Fund, will be at the discretion of the Committeee of Management.
